This is what I experienced when I started to notice my first symptoms in 2019. followed by a long process of medical examination, check ups, doctors not knowing what was wrong with me. Overall my family and friends were very supportive, but none of them felt the way I was feeling. My emotions weren’t comparable with theirs. I started looking for people who did go through the same process as me and struggled to. This was the beginning of De Waarde van, translated to English the value of.
These series of 7 textiles represent 7 phases that chronically ill people go through. For the research I collected data about the emotions other chronically ill people associate with certain phases of the illness. By comparing these to my own emotions I got insights on the similarities between our emotions. I also found some difference between us, these show that everyone experiences each phase differently. How the 7 textiles are designed can be seen in the graphic.︎︎︎

This colour scheme is the representation of complicated emotions that I researched among other chronically ill people and myself.

Consciously standing in my power instead of experiencing the effect of being ill is something I strive for after my diagnosis. Weaving these textiles by hand took a lot of time. This symbolizes the fast-paced society and time pressure with which chronically ill people have a hard time. The act of weaving gave me time to process experience in different phases of being ill, by performing a practical task and letting my subconscious take its course.
